Managing a herpes outbreak often involves being mindful of your diet. Some foods are known to potentially trigger outbreaks or exacerbate symptoms. Here are some foods to consider avoiding or consuming in moderation:
Arginine is a building block for protein. Some people with herpes may choose to avoid arginine, an amino acid found in many foods, because it can promote the spread of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV requires arginine to replicate and thrive in the body, and arginine can speed up the body's ability to reproduce the virus. This can lead to more severe and longer outbreaks. https://www.herpes.org.nz/about-herpes-questions/diet-herpes
Some foods that are high in arginine include:
- Chocolate
- Flaxseeds
- Nuts, such as almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, and walnuts
- Spinach
- Squash
- Whole grains
Foods to Avoid:
- Sugary Foods: High sugar intake can weaken the immune system, making it harder for your body to keep the herpes virus in check.
- Processed Foods: These can be high in sugar and unhealthy fats, which may exacerbate symptoms.
- Spicy Foods: For some people, spicy foods can irritate the skin or mucous membranes and potentially trigger an outbreak.
- Alcohol
- too much caffeine
Personally, I notice an outbreak come on when I drink too much caffeine, eat too much chocolate, or have too much peanut butter. I also do not have the best immune system, have food sensitivities, and sensitive skin. I believe whole mind, body, and spirit health play a role in how often and when an outbreak occurs. The healthier you are overall, the less frequent your outbreaks will be. However, different triggers can be hard to identify when you first get diagnosed because you have not experienced it before. Living with HSV can take some time to adjust too. Listen to your body and understand what it may be trying to tell you. The more mindful you are about what you put into your body, you will begin to concsiously observe how you feel after eating certain foods. This brings awareness of what may be causing you to feel a certain way or have an outbreak. Remember to take care of your mind, body, and soul.
Keep in mind everyone has their own unique immune system, allergies, and lifestyle habits that contribute to what triggers and how often they have a herpes outbreak. It is helpful to keep a health journal to track what foods may have caused an outbreak and how often.
